…Rambling Thoughts I
Posted on 5/26/2008 8:56:52 PMRecently a friend of mine pointed out one of the funniest versions of the aria “Glitter and be Gay” from Candide as sung by Kristin Chenoweth as the character Cunegonde. I love opera, but I am not really a fan of musicals. Be that as it may Candide is technically an operetta, and is based on the Voltaire satire of the same name, so it is tolerable.
Chenoweth is an interesting person. She has undergone some scrutiny from evangelicals because of her religious beliefs. She is a Christian of the kinder-nicer sort, and espouses her view that god loves everyone and is very accepting of those with alternative lifestyles. The interesting thing is that Chenoweth appears to be such a genuinely happy person that it makes those evangelicals who deride her seem so thoroughly unhappy. The Christian religion holds that man was created in god’s image, but it really makes you wonder if a man’s god is created in his own image.
Is that the eternal human condition, this lens of self-image through which everything is seen? Is our interpretation of the world really just a reflection of ourselves? That is not to say that perception is reality. I find that anthrocentric notion to be particularly abhorrent. Perception is an abstraction of reality. Reality is reality and exists independent of anyone’s perception of it- Gamma rays and sub-atomic particles existed before the human race discovered them.
...or perhaps this is all sententious uselessness.
